Top Reasons to Rent Vs. Buy a Forklift

Choosing whether to buy vs. rent a forklift or other material handling equipment can be a tough decision. Below are some of the most common reasons local businesses  rent instead of buy equipment.

  1. Temporarily increase capacity, then cut costs if business slows down
  2. Rental payments can be classified as an operating expense which reduces your tax liability (always consult a tax professional)
  3. Stay CARB compliant – Total Industries maintains our equipment to current standards. Also, equipment rented for fewer than 31 calendar days (per year) is exempt from CARB reporting
  4. Preserve capital and ability to borrow

Long-Term Forklift Rentals

If you rent a  forklift or other material handling equipment for six months or more, that’s considered a long-term rental.  With a long-term rental you:

Always have the most current technology –  Long-term rental agreements with TMH include upgrade options.

Fixed monthly payments, no surprises – Hedge against inflation and know exactly what you’ll pay each month to operate and maintain your equipment.

Convert old equipment into cash – Sell us older or infrequently-used equipment use the money to rent newer equipment.

Lower maintenance costs – Rental contracts include service and maintenance. With a long-term rental, you can reclaim space currently used for parts and servicing.

Enjoy preferred rates – Long-term rental customers get preferred rates on supplemental equipment to fill seasonal demands. We can build a long-term rental agreement that meets your business needs..

Boom Lift and Scissor Lift Rentals

Scissor lifts, boom lifts, cherry pickers and other aerial lifts are a convenient alternative to scaffolding. The “best” aerial lift to rent depends on three main factors:

– How much weight do you need to lift (aka lift capacity)?
– How high up or how far out do you need to reach?
– Will the equipment be used indoors or outdoors?

Important Questions to Ask Before You Rent a Forklift

What capacity do you need?
How much you need to lift (the max weight of your loads) is essential to getting the right forklift.

Will the forklift operate indoors or outdoors?
Some forklifts are designed to only be used indoors, others are indoor/outdoor.

How high do you need to lift?
Get an accurate measurement of how high your rental forklift will lift its loads.

Do you have a licensed forklift operator?
Anyone who operates a forklift (or aerial lift) must be certified and properly trained; this is an OSHA requirement. If you don’t have a staff member certified on the unit you’re renting, we can provide forklift operator training.

How many hours will you operate the forklift?
Most rental contracts are based on a 40-hour work week. If you run multiple shifts, or operate seven days a week, you could end up with expensive overtime use charges. Make sure your rental company is aware of your estimated hours.
