How to Become a Forklift Technician

How To Become A Forklift TechnicianUnless you know a forklift technician, most people don’t know about the excellent job opportunities for forklift mechanics.  Total Industries is currently hiring forklift techs and journeyman forklift techs and we offer some of the best benefits in the industry and it’s a great place to work.

To get started as a forklift technician, hands-on mechanical experience is helpful but not required. Some of the best technicians I know never touched a wrench until they started our apprenticeship program.

Repairing lift trucks can be very challenging yet incredibly rewarding. When I worked as a forklift tech, what I liked most about the job was the instant gratification you feel when you make a customer happy by fixing their problem.

Becoming a successful forklift technician takes a lot of dedication, hard work and the willingness to keep learning every day.  Technology hit our industry about 15 years ago when the California Air Resources Board decided that just about all of the equipment we service would have to meet stringent emission controls. This created all sorts of new challenges with diagnostics, laptop computers, software and error codes.

Most people start as a planned maintenance (PM) tech. PM techs may have zero experience, a background working as a mechanic in a similar field, or maybe they attended tech school. Trade or Tech school is always a plus. Graduates usually start higher up the pay scale and tend to learn much quicker than those who did not attend one.

After the PM tech has some training and 3-5 years experience, they become what we call a journeyman forklift tech, also known as a forklift field tech. These individuals are able to jump in a repair van and handle any service call.  To become a journeyman requires significant training, a personal set of tools and usually a clean DMV driving record.
