What To Look For When Buying A Used Forklift

I am constantly being asked by colleagues, vendors and competitors what I qualifications do I look for when purchasing used equipment. My first question always is, what is its history and where has been. I ask this to be certain it hasn’t been operating in corrosive areas or rough applications.  It is a piece of machinery so I know there’s typically not a perfect application, but if I have an idea of where it came from then I know generally know what I am buying.

What To Look For When Buying A Used ForkliftAnother crucial point is identifying what I am buying this equipment for and what is the ultimate goal. It is always important when shopping for a forklift to know what your capacities are; what the maximum weight you plan to lift is; height restrictions and where your load center is. Purchasing a forklift that does not meet your specific needs will prevent the job from getting accomplished.

The number of hours a forklift has is important to a lot of companies. Fortunately, one of the great features of a Toyota forklift is that they generally can run anywhere between 15,000-20,000 hours.  I have seen a Toyota forklift with 34,000 hours, which is pretty impressive.

If you’re a company that is looking at buying a lift and operating it one-two hours a day, it is safe to say that purchasing a lift with 7,000-8,000 hours on it will be sufficient enough for your needs. Think of it as buying a Toyota Tacoma truck, averaging around 70,000-80,000 miles on it. If you take care of it, it will take care of you.  However, if you are a company that needs the lift to run seven plus hours a day, it is recommended you look at a new piece of equipment.

Who to buy a lift from?  I would always recommend buying a Toyota lift from an authorized Toyota Dealer. They have all the OEM parts, factory trained mechanics, which is crucial when dealing with all of the advanced parts and electronics on them. The factory dealer knows what to look for; they go through an extensive reconditioning process and more importantly, believe in their product and back it up.

You have a lot of options when selecting a new or used forklift, but what sets TMH aside from the other dealers is the numerous Presidents Awards Service Excellence Awards from Toyota. That in alone should give a potential buyer piece of mind they are buying a quality product.
